Kargil, located 8,780 feet above the sea level is the second largest town of Ladakh after Leh, situated on the banks of Indus (Suru) river. This town has a population of around 10,657 where most of them are a mix of Dard and Tibetan descent.

A major chunk of the population is the follower of Buddhism. It is a transit hub with roads leading to Leh, Padum (Zanskar) and Srinagar. There had been an armed conflict between Indian and Pakistani armies in July 2009, which was known as Kargil war. There a number of monasteries here which even play host to several annual festivals.

It is located 60 kilometers from Drass and 204 kilometers from Srinagar respectively.It can be reached through 4 wheel drive vehicles and through regular bus services from Srinagar to Leh.

Mulbekh monastery is 36 Km away from Kargil, enshrined with the 9 meter tall idol of Maitreya Buddha .This gargantuan statue of Maitreya Buddha is overawing. There is a steep path arranged behind the building To reach the gompa. There are other majestic statues and frescoes apart from the limestone idol of Buddha carved in the rock face. Rangdum Monastery

The Rangdum Monastery is Located in classic Rangdum village. About 200 years ago, Rangdum monastery was built by Gelek Eashy Takpa during the reign of King Tsetan Namgyal of Ladakh. Located in stunning Suru Valley, the monastery has a museum that cherish and enshrines collection of Tibetan and other regional artefacts.Rangdum Monastery is amongst the prominant landmarks of the ladakh region.

Suru Valley
When the glacier in Panzella liquefy it dribble down to Suru basin, Suru valley is the most fertile region in the Ladakh. The valley is embellished with splendid greenery and magnificient fields of wheat, barley, radish, grapes etc. Millets, wheat, peas are prevalent cereals cultivated in the valley. The best time to visit Kargil is between the summer months of April to June. This is the time when the temperature during the day is warm and the sun keeps on shining brightly, and the nights remain pleasantly cool. These months are ideal for exploring the hidden wonders of Kargil. The months of July and September are monsoon months that should be avoided because of cloud bursts and landslides. After September, winter starts to creep in but the weather is still fine. After this, the months from October to February are avoided due to the extreme cold weather. The temperature drops down to as low as minus 42 degree C. Moreover, roads are also closed due to snow fall.

By Air -Srinagar airport is the nearest airport to Kargil. The distance between the two is 234 km. This airport is very well-connected to important cities of India such as Delhi, Amritsar, Leh, Bengaluru and Mumbai. From outside the airport, taxis and state-run buses are available for Kargil.
By Train -The nearest railway station to Kargil is Jammu Tawi railway station that has a good rail network major Indian cities such as Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Chennai. This railway station around 739 km away from Kargil.
By Road - Kargil town is very well -connected to various important cities of Jammu and Kashmir, by road. Regular state-run (local and deluxe) bus services are available to Kargil from Leh and from Srinagar. Hiring a private taxi is another option for travelers.
